Reliable and secure modules for the global IoT market: CHERRY Embedded Solutions and Rutronik conclude distribution agreement

Ispringen (Germany), May 07, 2024 – Rutronik Elektronische Bauelemente GmbH, one of the leading broadline distributors of electronic components in Europe, and Cherry Embedded Solutions GmbH (Vienna, Austria) have concluded a distribution agreement for the whole of Europe with immediate effect. As a result, Rutronik is expanding its product portfolio of Rockchip-based System-on-Modules (SoM) and single-board computers (SBC) for professional and industrial customers in the future markets of robotics, digital healthcare, smart displays, and intelligent video surveillance. CHERRY Embedded Solutions' reliable and secure modules stand out in particular for their application-specific performance and cost effectiveness. They are designed and manufactured in Vienna, Austria.

CHERRY Embedded Solutions is part of the listed Cherry SE and can thus leverage the parent company's global network for purchasing and qualifying electronic and mechanical parts, as well as for launching its products on different markets. The company provides products certified according to the Common Criteria for Information Technology Security Evaluation (ISO/IEC 15408) and fulfills, for example, the high security standards of the German healthcare telematics infrastructure.

"In the context of advancing automation and digitalization in industrial and professional environments, whether for autonomous mobile robots (AMR) or human-machine interfaces (HMI), there is particularly high demand for reliable processing modules with the corresponding computing power," explains Anja Schaal, Senior Manager Product Marketing at Rutronik. "Through our partnership with CHERRY Embedded Solutions, we can now offer high-quality modules tailored to support a wide range of smart applications, including autonomous mobile robots, smart medical devices, and professional, intelligent high-resolution displays for intuitive user interaction. A further advantage is the geographical proximity to existing and future customers, which ensures that the products are always available for the European market."

"We design, develop and produce our products at our company site in Vienna, in the heart of Europe.  This enables us to guarantee high product quality and compliance with the highest security standards," says Dr. Stefan Roth, Managing Director of CHERRY Embedded Solutions. "With Rutronik, we have a distribution partner who knows the requirements and challenges of manufacturers of smart products inside out. Their in-depth understanding of processes along the entire product life cycle is also an enormously valuable quality that will help us to expand our European customer base."

Cost efficiency meets performance: System-on-Modules and Single-Board Computer

CHERRY Embedded Solutions' core products include the JAGUAR SBC-RK3588-AMR, a single-board computer (SBC) developed for the mass production of cost-effective autonomous mobile robots (AMR) and TIGER SOM-RK3588-Q7, which has been specially designed to meet the needs of demanding, smart IoT applications.

Both products are based on Rockchip's high-end, low power SoC RK3588. It features cryptographic extensions, supports deep learning frameworks, and provides interfaces to multiple high-resolution cameras. To significantly shorten the product development cycle of customers, both modules are accompanied by a board support package (BSP) that is optimally configured to the hardware and runs on Linux supported by Debian and Yocto.

Theobroma Systems is now officially part of Cherry SE

Munich/Vienna, April 8, 2024 – Theobroma Systems Design und Consulting GmbH, a subsidiary of Cherry SE specializing in the development of secure and reliable system-on-modules (SoM) and single-board computers (SBC), has been operating under the name Cherry Embedded Solutions GmbH since March 2024.

CHERRY, the world's leading manufacturer of computer input devices and switches for mechanical keyboards, is standardising its brand landscape and clarifying the brand affiliation and integration of the Austrian company acquired in 2020. At the same time, CHERRY is underlining its increasing focus on the growth market of digitalisation in the medical sector. The subsidiary CHERRY Embedded Solutions, based in Vienna, will increasingly offer its innovative software and hardware solutions via the parent company's global network.

The CHERRY subsidiary's products and services are used in applications for the digitalisation of the healthcare sector even more. With CHERRY Embedded Solutions, the Group is expanding its presence in the future market of digital transformation – particularly in the areas of industry, security and e-health. Powerful, highly networked and system and data-secure hardware and software solutions are in high demand in these areas.

Theobroma releases JAGUAR, a Single-Board Computer dedicated to autonomous mobile robots

Vienna/Austria, October 20, 2023 - JAGUAR SBC-RK3588-AMR is specifically designed for use in robust and reliable autonomous mobile robots (AMR). Typical applications include industrial automation, agriculture and horticulture, construction, retail intralogistics, and hospitality.

JAGUAR features Rockchip’s high-end ARM-based SOC RK3588. A variety of interfaces allow the integration of a broad range of sensors, actuators, and communication modules such as high-resolution cameras, LiDAR and ToF sensors. The octa-core CPU and the Neural Processing Unit (NPU) provide the required processing power for simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), and for detecting obstacles to avoid collisions while navigating autonomously.

“On a single board, JAGUAR provides a cost-efficient and optimized processing platform for autonomous mobile robots to be produced in series. It comes along with a board support package (BSP) that is optimally configured to the hardware and runs on Linux supported by Debian and Yocto. JAGUAR helps significantly shorten the product development cycle of our customers,” said Dr. Stefan Roth, Managing Director at Theobroma Systems.

Peak performance for autonomous mobile robots

The RK3588 features four ARM Cortex-A76 at 2.4 GHz and four ARM Cortex-A55 at 1.8 GHz, a Mali G610-GPU and an NPU with up to 6 TOPs. It opens up a wide range of possibilities for artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning applications.

Multiple interfaces

Two SuperSpeed USB 3.1 interfaces enable high-resolution cameras, stereo cameras or sensors such as 2D and 3D LiDAR as well as ToF sensors to be connected. Four MIPI-CSI interfaces allow the cost-efficient connection of high-resolution cameras.

CANBUS, RS-485 and Gigabit Ethernet ensure seamless integration into the robot. Two PCIe slots host LTE, WiFi or Bluetooth and an NVMe/SSD. Finally, an optional “mezzanine” extension board, which plugs into a dedicated port, enables the use of a wide range of additional interfaces.

Single power supply and cooling concept

The compact 135 x 93 mm JAGUAR SBC board is powered by a single power source with a voltage range of 12 to 24 volts. While consumption is a moderate 18 watts under load, it delivers up to 35 watts for devices connected via PCIe and USB.

The RK3588 processor is located on the bottom of the PCBA as the highest element, which allows for a simplified thermal connection to the housing.

Ready for secure cloud services

JAGUAR’s Secure Element is Common Criteria (EAL6+) certified. It ensures government-grade security for identification and key storage. This enables cloud services, such as remote software management and preventive device management, to be rendered in accordance with the highest level of cybersecurity.
